Boxer Patrick Day dies aged 27 after suffering serious brain injury
American fighter Patrick Day has died aged 27 after suffering a brain injury in his fight from Charles Conwell at Chicago.
Day has been rushed to hospital on Saturday after he was knocked out by Charles Conwell at the 10th round on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyks struggle with Chazz Witherspoon.
He was treated by a physician at the ring and had been stretchered by paramedics and transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
He had been in a very critical condition for the upcoming few days on Wednesday Day dropped his battle.
Promoter Lou DiBella said in a statement:He was surrounded by his family, close friends and members of the boxing group, including his mentor, his friend and coach Joe Higgins. On behalf of Patricks family, staff, and the nearest to him, were grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been evident since his injury.
Patrick Day did not need to box. He came from a fantastic family, he had been smart, educated, had values and had other avenues available for him to earn a living. He decided understanding the dangers which each and every fighter faces after he or she walks into a boxing ring. Boxing is exactly what Pat loved to do.
It becomes very tricky to explain away or justify the dangers of boxing at a time like this. This is not a time in which edicts or pronouncements are suitable, or so the answers are readily available.
It is, though, a time to get a call to action. While we do not have the answers we possess the means to answer them and have the opportunity to respond and consequently, know many of the queries and also make boxing safer. That really can be a way we can honor the heritage of Pat Day.
It is the fourth boxing death of 2019 following Russian Maxim Dadashev and also Hugo Alfredo Santillan of both Argentina both lost their lives at July and Boris Stanchov.
