Lewis Hamilton says title chase stopped Charles Leclerc collision
Lewis Hamilton says that he wouldn’t have backed from his scrap by Charles Leclerc at the Italian GP and the group”would have collided” – if he was not chasing a sixth Formula 1 title.
Hamilton was hunting down race-winner Leclerc for much of Sunday’s enthralling Grand Prix and the couple went wheel-to-wheel approaching the next chicane, but the Mercedes motorist had been thrown off the track and had to cut to prevent contact.
Hamilton queries Leclerc ruling
FIA explain Leclerc’yellow card’
A crash could probably have ruined both motorists’ races, and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff asserted that Hamilton”was instrumental rather than making it an incident”.
But asked if he would have done anything differently if the F1 2019 tournament was solved, Hamilton admitted:”I wouldn’t have moved. We would have collided.”
Hamilton is 63 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas using seven races left as he looks to become only the second driver in history together with six crowns.
“The driver which goes to the Drivers’ Championship stored Charles and rescued himself” added Wolff, who sensed Leclerc’s motions were”maybe on the line”.
“Lewis understood what he was doinghe didn’t lose any pieces or parts in that episode, but he could have equally decided,’I am not going to let it happen’, and set the two cars outside.”
Hamilton looking forward to more Leclerc battles
Hamilton questioned the stewards’ decision not to inflict a harsher punishment on Leclerc and branded the driving because”reckless” on team radio – but later insisted he had no problem with”among the very respectful drivers” at Leclerc.
“There is no lack of admiration,” Hamilton told reporters. “We do not have a problem, we aren’t in a struggle, I congratulated him if he got out of the car.
“Charles is among the very respectful motorists. This is the very first time that I have gone wheel-to-wheel with him, and using a driver, you understand how scenarios are approached by them and possibly position your car next time. Maybe I will do a better job next time.”
Hamilton continued:”There’s zero issue with ushe did an outstanding job and I really don’t have any issue with it, it is what it really is.
“I have not talked to him and also we do not have a issue but when we receive a moment together we might chat, only reverse functions and make certain he is cool that if I am able and that occurs and that is cool and that’s how we are racing.
“Out of what I know entering the race you are supposed to leave a difference, now I don’t know whether that’s true. Nevertheless, it’s great that we are able to race and now proved to be a battle which is good.
“We’ll continue to race and I’m looking forward to a lot more races ”
Hamilton glad to’race like this’
Leclerc has been handed the black-and-white flag by race stewards, F1’s variant of a’yellow card’, and Wolff said he considers that rule will make contact between the motorists”common practice”.
But when it came to penalties and rules while Hamilton called for consistency, he said he is happy to race.
“If that is the way we’re permitted to race then I will race like this,” he stated. “Provided that people know that you are permitted not to leave a car width by way of example, as long as you aren’t contradicting us and there’s a very clear message.
“So you are permitted to run wide even if someone is there and you simply get a warning sign, and you only require that after to potentially maintain the man behind you.
“As long because it’s clear that that’s the way moving ahead it is fine so I know how to go into battle and it’s the same for all of the motorists.”
