England captain Joe Root said levelling the Ashes in 2-2 rounded off a summer that’s been a”tremendous success” for English cricket.
Victory in an wonderful final watched England win a World Cup in July.
Them inspired into an astounding win in success and the next Test at The Oval assured the series finished in a draw though they did not regain the Ashes.
“What a summer of cricket it has been,” said Root.
England’s World Cup final victory over New Zealand came following a super more than was tied, while, at Headingley, Stokes played among the all-time great innings to lead the hosts for their greatest ever Test run-chase, the last 76 runs forthcoming into a last-wicket stand alone with Jack Leach.
“It’s been phenomenal,” added the Yorkshire batsman. “That World Cup was amazing, for it to complete how it did, made for excellent seeing – not only the England games, but across the board.
“It was backed up with this evenly matched Ashes series. Support blessed us throughout and the cricket was fairly gripping. It was rather tough to participate in at times, especially if we had been on the end of this.
“It’s been a enormous victory for English cricket and also a fantastic opportunity to spring up the game ahead in this country.”
England’s defeat at the fourth Test at Old Trafford ensured Australia couldn’t shed the show and could retain the Ashes.
Defending a listing which has seen them never lose a home series to Australia since 2001, the series levelled at The Oval using a 135-run success.
“A 2-2 score looks a hell of a whole lot better than 3-1,” said Root, that has failed to acquire either of the Ashes series as captain. “It’s probably a fair result.
“There’ve been instances when we have been out proficient and we have been cluttered for the odd hour here and there, which has cost us, but we have always fought very difficult.
“Hopefully this is going to be a huge stepping stone and starting point from where people could kick as a team.”
And Root repeated his desire to be in charge when England attempt to win the urn in the tour of Australia in 2021-22, saying he wishes to become captain for the”long haul”.
“I am desperate to carry this team forward,” he said. “I am in a very privileged place to be captain of the Evaluation group and I’ll do everything I to can to get us really well prepared for moving down there and doing something really specific.”
England all-rounder Ben Stokes:”This was a weird feeling at the end. We are pleased with what we managed to do in this game but we still couldn’t win the Ashes.
“In the beginning of summer everyone was so excited about what we had ahead, today summer time came to a conclusion it has been amazing to be a part of as a participant.
“I really don’t think you may ever look back and ask what if we’d done this or done different. It has been a fantastic series that has ebbed and flowed and that is showed at the final result. I believe that it’s an unbiased effect between two and teams everybody else was treated to a great series and as Ashes cricket is.
“I will return on Headingley in a couple of years’ time with fond memories probably, but I would swap it winning for the Ashes still.”
Asked if Joe Root is the Perfect person to take England forward, Stokes explained:”100 percent”
England bowler Jofra Archer, who was known as man of the game after taking 6-62 at the first innings:”In the moment I’ve placed an England shirt on it’s been exciting cricket. I’m glad we were able to draw the sequence. Jeez… bowling at Steve Smith was a job. I’m glad to see the back of him.”
Former England captain Michael Vaughan:”Steve Smith was pleasure to watch. From where he was Edgbaston, that innings was particular. His team were gone at 122-8 and the way he played with so much control and shepherded Peter Siddle. That was among the Test innings. He’s been a pleasure to see.
“With England, I think we might observe a shift in approach the Test team chooses. Maybe the games will be missed by the players if they’re playing with all 3 formats. The Test team needs a small amount of TLC and Joe Root would be the skipper to take them ahead.”
