TSN Hockey Insiders Pierre LeBrun and Bob McKenzie reported that the Sharks signed defenseman Erik Karlsson to an eight-year bargain, worth roughly $11.5 million per season, which makes him the third-highest paid player in the NHL.
LeBrun confirmed the deal:”Additional to @TSNBobMcKenzie’s report on Erik Karlsson, I’m told the deal is done: 8 years maximum deal, north of $11 million per season… that the Sharks with a massive move in keeping the celebrity D by hitting the market. “Karlsson played only 53 games with the Sharks last season due to a groin injury, which he underwent surgery on previous month. The talented defenseman scored three goals and posted 45 points while averaging 24:29 time on ice per game (TOI), his lowest mark since 2010-11. He scored two goals and submitted 16 points.
The Sharks obtained the 29-year-old after sending forward Chris Tierney, Josh Norris and Rudolfs Balcers, defenseman Dylan DeMelo, a first round pick in 2019 or 2020, a second round pick in 2019 and 2 conditional draft picks to the Senators.
The Swedish defenseman was selected 15th overall in the 2008 NHL Draft and he’s won the Norris Trophy in 2012 and 2015 . The six-time NHL All-Star has scored 129 aims and posted 563 points in 680 matches over 10 years in the league.
