(CNN) — At least six people were hurt following lightning struck a tree in the PGA Tour Championship golf tournament at Atlanta, police said Saturday.
A woman who sought refuge under a tree and five men were wounded when lightning hit the tree, then Atlanta Police Department spokesman James White explained.
They were taken to local hospitals”alert, mindful, and breathing, and to get further medical treatment,” White explained.
One of the wounded was treated at the Northside Hospital and published Saturday evening, stated Katherine Watson, the spokeswoman of the hospital.
PGA Tour mentioned in a statement that those injured were struck with debris and a number of them were lovers attending the championship.
When organizers suspended play because of inclement weather the third round of the PGA Tour Championship was at the East Lake Golf Club on Saturday, that the PGA said.
“The safety of our fans, players and spouses is of the utmost significance,” the announcement said.
A shrub and a care area struck close to the driving range and the tee nearly 30 minutes later actions were suspended by organizers, Mark Russell, PGA’s vice-president of competition, principles and administration, told reporters.
The lightning knocked debris away from the tree, wounding some people, he further added.
Russell said everybody encouraged to leave the route and take refuge. In addition, he said the PGA had placed a message on the warning audiences that severe weather approached.
“You have got a lot of individuals, and you need to do this quickly and sometimes folks don’t take shelter,” he explained.
When asked if a half dozen was enough time Russell said he could answer the question but said they had done everything they could.
“I wish I can say no or yes. I mean, we wanted to find everybody, the spectators, the players, the volunteers off here as the second we saw we had danger, and soon as we possibly could , we suspended drama. We had on the scoreboards there was coming weather, and we got off the players, we got off the volunteers,” he said.
All play was suspended for the day in the tournament in which Justin Thomas contributes Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka. The championship is expected to resume.
The PGA Tour Championship was held since 2004 at the East Lake Golf Club. The winner will take home $15 million with prize money.
