Sam Allardyce believes Steve Bruce is a better match at Newcastle than he’d have already been, but insisted that he was”chuffed” by the club’s fascination with him.
Allardyce revealed back in June that he was initially to replace Rafael Benitez in St James’ Park but says he rejected the chance to return to the role, he previously held between 2008 and 2007.
Steve Bruce was appointed as the new manager of Newcastle and Allardyce believes the Magpies went to find the man that was right.
“Newcastle wasn’t for me personally,” Allardyce told Sky Sports. “I was quite chuffed that Mike [Ashley] considered me but I felt that Brucey had been a far much better match than me and decent luck .
“It is his dream move to manage his home city club and that I wish him well. This was the one thing which came up with this summer”
Allardyce has been since leaving Everton in the end of last season and, enjoying his job as a pundit and while he is in no hurry to get back to management, the England manager is open for supplies.
“You never know [if he will be back],” Allardyce added. “It did not happen last season that was my very first year out of professional football for the first time since I was 15.
“It was a bit strange just watching all of the matches but I found it to be quite interesting in seeing how exactly I feel about the sport and how I’d feel about what I would do when I got straight back in – you have loads of time to get ready if you do need to get back in the game”
