England captain Joe Root stated levelling the Ashes at 2-2 round off a summer that’s been a”huge success” for English cricket.
Victory in an remarkable final watched England win the initial World Cup in July.
Them inspired to an triumph in success and the next Test at The Oval promised the series though they failed to regain the Ashes.
“What a summer of cricket it has been,” said .
England’s World Cup final victory over New Zealand came following a super over was tied, however, at Headingley, Stokes played one of those all-time amazing innings to lead the hosts for their greatest ever Test run-chase, the final 76 runs forthcoming at a last-wicket stand with Jack Leach.
“It’s been phenomenal,” added that the Yorkshire batsman. “That World Cup was amazing, for this to finish how it did, made for excellent viewing – not just the England games, but around the board.
“It was backed up with this equally matched Ashes series. We were blessed with support that was brilliant during and the cricket was gripping. It was quite difficult to be involved in at times, particularly if we were on the end of it.
“It’s been a massive victory for English cricket and also a great chance to spring the game forward in this country.”
England’s defeat at the fourth Test at Old Trafford guaranteed Australia could not shed the series and would retain the Ashes.
Defending a record that has seen them never lose a house show England levelled the series at The Oval.
“A 2-2 score seems a hell of a whole lot better than 3-1,” said Root, that has failed to win either of the Ashes series as captain. “It is probably a fair result.
“There’ve been instances once we have been out proficient and we’ve been cluttered for the odd hour here and there, that has cost usbut we’ve always fought quite difficult.
“Hopefully that will be a gigantic stepping stone and starting point from where we could kick on as a team.”
And Root his desire to be in control when England try to win the urn in the tour Australia at 2021-22, saying he wants to become ruler for the”long haul”.
“I’m distressed to carry this team forward,” he explained. “I’m in a very privileged place to be captain of the Test group and I will do whatever I to can to make us quite well prepared for moving down there and hopefully doing something really particular.”
England all-rounder Ben Stokes:”It was a weird feeling in the end. We are extremely happy with what we managed to perform in this match but we still couldn’t win the Ashes.
“At the start of summer everybody was so excited about what we had beforehand, now summer time has come to an end it’s been amazing to be a part of as an individual participant.
“I really don’t think you can ever return and ask what should we had done this or done that different. It has been and that’s showed at the end result. I believe that it’s a result between teams since Ashes cricket is and everybody has been treated to a excellent series and two evenly matched.
“I will return Headingley in a few years’ time with fond memories likely, but I’d swap it for winning to your Ashes still.”
Asked if Joe Root is the Ideal man to take England forward, Stokes explained:”100%”
England bowler Jofra Archer, who was named man of the game after taking 6-62 at the first innings:”From the moment I have placed an England shirt on it’s been enjoyable cricket. I am glad we could draw on the set. Jeez… bowling at Steve Smith was a endeavor. I am glad to see the back of him.”
Former England captain Michael Vaughan:”Steve Smith was joy to see. From where he was at Edgbaston, that first innings was special. His team were gone at 122-8 and how he shepherded Peter Siddle and performed with control. That was one of the wonderful innings. He has really been a pleasure to watch.
“With England, I think we might see a shift in approach the Test team chooses. Perhaps the players will miss the games if they’re playing with all 3 formats. The Test team needs a little bit of TLC and Joe Root would be the skipper to carry them forward.”
